Derry judge hits out at court delays

Derry Magistrate's Court

A bail application for a man charged with a series of domestic offences has been adjourned until October 31.

Aiden Melaugh (32) of Stephen's Court in Derry appeared charged with assaulting a female on October 24, criminal damage to windows and a car, possessing a hammer with intent to commit criminal damage and stealing £120 from his former partner.

A police officer connected the accused to the charges and opposed bail.

She told the court police were contacted by a 999 call by a female who said she was at her friend's house and her former partner, the defendant, was armed with a hammer breaking windows.

The defendant made off before police arrived but was apprehended shortly afterwards.

The female said that the defendant had taken £120 from her earlier in the day and then came to her friend's house and assaulted the friend before returning witha hammer and smashing windows.

The woman said that when she returned to her home she found a dent in a new car and windows broke.

At interview the defendant said he had been in the company of the alleged injured party but there had been no incidents.

Police objected to bail due to the risk of reoffending and the unsuitable address.

Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley said that several addresses had been put to police but the officer said these had been deemed unsuitable.

The solicitor then asked for the bail application to be adjourned to allow him to look into matters.

Melaugh was remanded in custody until October 31.
