A north west sustainability expert has been named one of the UK’s most impactful environmental leaders.

Will Ennett was recognised on the prestigious ENDS Report Power List Top 100 for his work to reduce the telecommunications sector’s carbon footprint.

The Derry-based consultant was one of just eight private sector professionals to make the list, which celebrates the environmental experts – including lawyers, consultants and academics - who have made the greatest impact in the last two years.

The awards, based on nominations from peers in the environmental sector, praised Ennett’s work as head of sustainability at the telecommunications giant TalkTalk, where he set up and chaired a cross-industry forum with representation from government, regulators, and business competitors to make groundbreaking joint commitments to reduce their environmental impact.

One nominator noted that Ennett’s initiatives to help small and medium enterprises reach net zero have been particularly important, “given [SMEs] are often overlooked, or given advice that does not suit their available resources”.

Another nominator added: “It is that holistic and pragmatic approach that really sets Will apart.”

Ennett, a Chartered Environmentalist, is now using these learnings to help companies across the UK and Ireland be more sustainable and meet their decarbonisation and ESG (environmental, social and governance) targets.

He said: “I am delighted with the recognition; it can be uncertain times for the sector, but I hope to help businesses in driving positive environmental change which can also create financial value.”
