All prospective Nursery and Primary 1 children and their parents are invited to the Annual Open Day of the Model Primary School on Monday, January 13, from 2.15pm to 6.00pm.
The Model Primary School is situated in the heart of the city on the Northland Road where it has been since 1862 and is a controlled Educational Primary School.
We have a nursery class, 2 specialist classes and ten mainstream classes from primary one to primary seven, with a total of 296 pupils.
The school has grown significantly in numbers in recent years due to its proud historical reputation and is renowned for attracting pupils from well beyond our catchment area.
We continually provide excellent opportunities for each and every pupil’s academic, social, emotional, and moral development.
Our motto is ‘Celebrating Cultural Diversity’ – and for us that means opportunity for all our children in helping them explore a variety of faiths, backgrounds, cultures and none, enabling them to grow up with a broad and balanced view of life.
At the Model, all children feel valued and welcomed and are proud to be part of our school family.
Our academic record is up there with the best and we are proud of the achievements of our pupils.
At the Model, we believe in developing the child. Our children learn best when they are happy, and when there is effective partnership between home and school.
We believe in engendering in our pupils a hunger for learning, a hunger to achieve at the highest possible level, and, most importantly, a hunger to be good and decent people.
We want to bring out the best in our children, and the well-being of our children goes hand-in-hand with their learning. Alongside a broad and balanced curriculum, our school days are filled with a rich range of activities and opportunities which give the talents of every child a chance to shine.
Our children have opportunities to take part in a variety of sports including swimming, football, Gaelic, cricket, rugby and badminton.
Music also plays an important role in our school, with annual shows, choir performances at Christmas, Confirmation, First Communion and participation in the Derry Feis, as well as instrument tuition being available in Key Stage 2.
We place high importance on Nurture provision – how we support the social and emotional needs of our children during their school days.
When your child walks into the school each morning, we want them to feel protected and safe. We have a sensory room, sensory corridor and 4 Nurture spaces within our school which are widely used. During the last school inspection, ETI commented on ‘how happy and safe the pupils felt in our school.’
We also have a close working relationship with the many community groups around our school as well as our neighbouring schools, places of worship and the council who provides a variety of cultural workshops.
When your family choose the Model, your become members of a strong and proud school community that has a long and successful history in the city.
Please come along on Monday, 13th January and see what our school has to offer your child. This can be arranged by contacting me by telephone at the school office, or by email. We will be more than happy to show you what the Model Primary School can offer.
