Derry Magistrate's Court
A man, who was knocked off his bike by police, has admitted a charge of cycling while unfit through drink or drugs at Derry Magistrate's Court today.
Caolan Roberts (24) of Greenwalk in Derry admitted the charge that occurred on July 28.
He also admitted a charge of possessing cocaine and failing to stop for police on the same date.
The court heard that police observed Roberts cycling on the Skeoge Link and believed he was under the influence.
They stopped him and found him to be unsteady on his feet but Roberts then cycled away.
A police officer pursuing him knocked the defendant off his bike and he was detained.
Cocaine was found in his shorts.
A subsequent breath test revealed a reading of 67mgs, almost twice the legal limit.
Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley said that the charge of cycling while unfit did not refer to someone being overweight or even wearing Lycra although that possibly should be an offence.
He said Roberts simply had too much to drink and probably the 'biggest danger was to himself.'
The solicitor said that it was a very small amount of drugs for personal use.
Roberts was fined a total of £350.
