SDLP Moyola Councillor Denise Johnston has warmly thanked Lough Neagh Rescue, Mid Ulster First Responders and Community Rescue Services at the Mid Ulster Council Civic Awards.
The SDLP councillor, who is Deputy Chair of Mid Ulster Council, presided over the civic ceremony on Tuesday to honour the community-based rescue services.
Speaking after the ceremony, Councillor Johnston said: “On behalf of Mid Ulster Council I was honoured to preside over the civic reception to recognise the work of the members of three organisations that are close to my heart - Lough Neagh Rescue, Mid Ulster First Responders and Community Rescue Services.
“It takes a special kind of person to give up their free time so selflessly. We should never underestimate the importance of that sacrifice.
“Most of us will, if we are lucky, only meet these volunteers at events to fundraise and raise awareness, or we might hear of their activities on the news.
“We never want to need their services; that’s not a position any of us want to be in.
“For our society there is a reassurance in knowing they exist.
“Each of the organisations who received a Civic Award tonight rely on committed volunteers. I encourage anyone interested in helping with their work in any way to contact the relevant group.
“Not all heroes wear capes, but they may often wear the neon colours of high viz gear, life jackets and heavy boots, and carry torches to shine light in the darkest of places.
“They seek to find, and they don’t rest until their work is done.
“We thank them all from the bottom of our hearts.”
