A man charged with assaulting his former partner has been granted bail at Derry Magistrate's Court despite his address being next door to one of the alleged victims in the case.

Neil McFeely (39) of Lawrence Hill in Derry is charged with two assaults on June 23 this year.

At today's hearing a police officer told the court that police were opposed to him being granted bail due to the proximity to the alleged victim and the fear of re-offending.

The officer said that while the female victim had made a withdrawal statement there was another witness to the alleged assaults.

Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott said that the witness did not reside near where the defendant intended to reside.

He said that McFeely had been granted bail at Coleraine Magistrate's Court on Friday on more serious charges involving the same woman.

The defendant was released on bail on condition he does not contact either of the alleged victims and will appear again on September 19.
