Derry Magistrate's Court

Two Eastern European men have been remanded in custody at Derry Magistrate's Court today charged in connection with cannabis cultivation.

Skirmants Jursa (34) a Latvian national and Paulius Rinkevicous (36) a Lithuanian national both of no fixed abode faced a series of charges.

Jursa was charged with cultivating cannabis, being concerned in the supply of cannabis, dishonestly using electricity and criminal damage to a ceiling on May 12.

He was also charged with possessing criminal property and possessing a Class A drug on May 13.

Rinkevicous was charged with possessing a fraudulent passport, having a fraudulent vehicle registration, cultivating cannabis, being concerned in the supply cannabis, possessing the drug, dishonestly using electricity, criminal damage to a ceiling and having no insurance.

All of the offences were said to have occurred on May 12.

A police officer connected the accused to the charges and opposed bail.

The court heard that police found the cannabis being cultivated at an address in Magherafelt.

While they were there Jursa cycled past and a civilian told police they had seen him going in and out of the property.

The police officer said that the immigration authorities were aware of Jursa but not under that name.

The officer said that they had been unable to fully verify the identity.

He said a sum of €8,000 and £8,000 had been found in the course of the investigation.

Defence counsel Sinead Rogan said that the evidence linking Jursa to the address was 'tenuous'.

She said police did not yet have a statement from the civilian witness.

District Judge Barney McElholm said that the defendant's identity still had to be confirmed.

He asked 'who runs around with €8,000 and £8,000 in cash?'

The police officer told the court that 'multiple bankcards had been found.'

The judge refused bail and remanded Jursa in custody to appear again on June 5.

As regards Rinkevicous the judge said that even his identity was unclear as he had a passport with a different name.

He said this defendant was found in a premises with cannabis plants and was 'completely unsuitable for bail.'

He was remanded in custody to appear again on June 5.
