Ronan McGovern
Ronan McGovern first realised there was a problem at the beginning of May 2024, and on 1 July was diagnosed with Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis (LCH).
This is a rare condition affecting approximately 1 in 200,000 children each year.
Rónán began treatment on 5 July at the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children.
In Rónán’s case, the disease developed in his orbital bone, bringing with it many complications, and contact sport was completely ruled out.
As a keen Gaelic footballer with Watty Graham's, Rónán refused to accept this and from the moment of his diagnosis and was determined to return to the playing field.

At every appointment, he pressed his oncologist for an answer as to when he could play football again.
In December, it was decided that Rónán, from Maghera, would be reviewed by his neurologist.
This week, his prayers were unexpectedly answered when the results of his CT scan gave him permission to return to sport.
"Since his diagnosis, Rónán’s driving ambition has been to put on his Watty Graham's jersey once more — and at the weekend that dream came true, scoring a point in the process," a club statement confirmed.
The club's social media post about Ronan's story has gained a lot of love, support and cheer from many local people who congratulated Ronan on his return to sports.
One comment said: "Great news Rónán, I’m looking forward to seeing you continue your football career, good luck!".
Another person said: "He truly is a determined and inspirational young man. Never once complained. A credit to his family. First point of many to come Ronan".
"Great news Ronan. I Hope you will be able to wear the jersey with pride for many many
years. God bless you," another person commented.
"What a story. He's always in the gym pushing on," another person said.
