Mid Ulster councillors approve a rate increase of 3.4%

Mid Ulster District Council has agreed the district rate for the 2026/27 financial year following a Special Meeting of Council held last night (Monday).

Councillors approved a rate increase of 3.4% for both domestic and non-domestic properties. The decision reflects a careful balance between setting a sustainable budget and minimising the impact on ratepayers through continued efficiency savings and prudent financial management.

The Council’s budgeting approach remains firmly focused on delivering the essential services residents rely on, while also responding to what communities across Mid Ulster value most.

Rates income in 2026/27 will be used to protect and deliver the essential services residents rely on every day, while also investing in improvements that directly benefit local communities and support the long-term future of Mid Ulster.

For residents, this means continued investment in community wellbeing, including support for local sports clubs, community groups and events that bring people together and strengthen civic pride across towns and villages. A simplified Community Investment Programme will make it easier for local groups to access support and plan sustainably for the future.

Rates will also help fund visible improvements to local places, with progress on leisure facilities, recycling centres, town regeneration projects and environmental and educational initiatives that enhance quality of life and make Mid Ulster a better place to live, work and visit.

In line with the Council’s Sustainability and Climate Change Action Plan, rates income will also support practical measures to reduce carbon emissions, promote environmental awareness and invest in energy-efficient solutions that help manage costs over time.

Rates income will continue to support local jobs and economic opportunity, through business start-up support, skills and employment programmes, improved connectivity, and partnership working to advance major infrastructure and economic development projects across the district.
