Social media restrictions must be considered to keep children safe online

SDLP MLA Cara Hunter is calling for proportionate restrictions to prohibit social media use for under 16s, alongside a wider programme of regulation, engagement with young people and support for parents

POLL: Should we be considering a ban on social media for Irish teens?

The motion will be discussed tomorrow (Tuesday).

SDLP East Derry MLA Cara Hunter has said that every option, including restricting social media access, must be considered to keep children safe online and protect democracy.
She was speaking ahead of an SDLP Opposition Day motion on Tuesday.
The motion calls for proportionate restrictions to prohibit social media use for under 16s, alongside a wider programme of regulation, engagement with young people and support for parents.
East Derry MLA Cara Hunter said: “We have repeatedly seen recently how harmful social media can be, not only for our young people, but for everyone. The creation of deepfakes and exploitation of AI has intensified discussions around keeping our children safe online, following proactive action from countries who have successfully introduced age-based restrictions when it comes to social media. Across platforms and age groups, deliberate misinformation and disinformation are distorting political and societal discourse.
“There is no one-size-fits-all solution to this issue. Restricting access for under-16s cannot work in isolation, but it must be part of a broader, evidence-based approach. The SDLP has been consulting widely, including with parents and at a roundtable with young people That includes exploring options such as phased or graduated restrictions, alongside stronger safeguards and clearer responsibilities for platforms.
“The SDLP wants to see engagement with parents and young people, backed by regulation and proper enforcement for social media companies who have allowed online spaces to degenerate into a lawless wasteland. We cannot allow children to be exposed to widespread harmful material and subjected to bullying, grooming or other exploitation.
“The UK Government is currently carrying out a consultation into online harms and child safety, including restrictions for young people and we believe this is a positive step. That’s why we are using our Opposition time to bring forward this motion that seeks to create safe spaces for our children online and to protect them from harm in the dark corners of social media.”
