Calls for continued transparency and community engagement on Garvagh Forest works

Aontú Deputy Leader and East Derry representative, Gemma Brolly, has sought clarification from the Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council and the Forest Service regarding the extensive tree removal currently taking place in Garvagh Forest.
As a resident of Limavady Road, Garvagh, Ms. Brolly expressed both her appreciation for the beauty of the forest and her concern at the large-scale removal of trees observed in recent weeks.
“Garvagh Forest is a source of pride and peace for so many of us locally. Like many residents, I was shocked to see such a large number of trees removed and wanted to ensure that residents had clear and accurate information on what’s happening and why,” said Ms. Brolly.
Following engagement with the relevant authorities, Ms. Brolly was informed that the extensive felling is part of recovery and safety operations following the significant storm damage caused by Storm Eowyn. The Forest Service confirmed that large-scale harvesting has been required to clear windblown trees and stabilise damaged areas.
The Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council holds a licence from the Forest Service to manage recreational activities within Garvagh Forest, however, tree removal and forest restoration works remain the responsibility of the Forest Service. Once harvesting operations are completed, the Council has confirmed that repairs will take place on several mountain bike trails and walking routes, many of which have been closed due to storm damage.
In planning terms, Garvagh Forest lies outside the Settlement Development Limits of Garvagh and is designated under the Garvagh Forest Local Landscape Policy Area (LLPA) within the Northern Area Plan 2016. The Council is currently preparing a new Local Development Plan (LDP), which will include a review of all LLPA designations across the Borough. The draft plan strategy is currently expected to be published in autumn/winter 2026.
Ms. Brolly also acknowledged the proactive involvement of Hare’s Corner Cooperative, who have been in close contact with relevant departments and have requested a public meeting to inform and update residents about the developments within Garvagh Forest.
“I want to commend Hare’s Corner Cooperative for their proactive and vitally important work on behalf of our community,” said Ms. Brolly.
“Transparency and public engagement are essential in ensuring residents feel connected and informed. I have written to the relevant departments to offer my full support for Hare’s Corner’s request for a public meeting and to offer any assistance I can provide to help facilitate it.”
Ms. Brolly concluded by expressing appreciation for the cooperation shown between the involved bodies and local residents, stating: “It is reassuring to see positive engagement between Council officials, the Forest Service, and our local groups. Together, we can ensure Garvagh Forest recovers and thrives for the benefit of both nature and the community.”
