Sandelford School in Coleraine.
East Derry MLA Claire Sugden has asked the Minister of Education for an update on the long-term future of Sandelford School in Coleraine, following the temporary relocation of a number of pupils to Balnamore Primary School.
“The recent relocation of pupils has been unsettling for families and pupils alike, and it underlines wider concerns that have existed for some time about the long-term sustainability of the current arrangements at Sandelford School,” she said.
“Sandelford provides essential support for children with special educational needs, and that is a credit to the dedication and professionalism of the staff who work there. With demand for SEN places expected to continue to grow, it is all the more important that the Department has a clear, long-term plan in place, rather than relying on short-term or temporary solutions.
“For children with special educational needs, stability and routine are critical. Parents need certainty about where their children will be educated, and children need time and consistency to settle into their learning environment without the disruption caused by ongoing uncertainty.
“I am asking the Minister to provide clarity on how the Department intends to secure the long-term future of Sandelford School. This is about ensuring that SEN provision in this area is planned properly, is fit for purpose, and gives families the confidence they need to plan for the years ahead.”
