Police were called to the Garvagh area following reports of a male swinging the weapon on Sunday evening

Man arrested in County Derry village after running towards police armed with machete

A man has been arrested in County Derry after he ran towards police armed with a machete.

The incident happened in Garvagh yesterday evening (Sunday, July 7).

A PSNI spokesperson stated: "At approximately 7pm Sunday 6th July we received reports of a male swinging a machete in Garvagh.

"Within minutes Police arrived and located the male. On seeing Police the male has unsheathed the weapon and ran towards Police.

"The officers were able to disarm the male and secure him with no injuries to any person.

"The male remains in custody assisting us with our enquiries."
