Derry Magistrate's Court

A man has been remanded in custody at Derry Magistrates' Court for a series of offences including causing unnecessary suffering to a dog by stabbing it in the face with a broken bottle.

Harry Boyle (34) of Carnhill in Derry appeared charged with a series of offences that were said to have occurred on June 12.

He was charged with entering a premises as a trespasser and stealing prescription drugs, assaulting a female, wounding a female, causing unnecessary suffering to a dog, threatening to damage property and seven driving offences including dangerous driving.

A police officer connected the accused to the charges and opposed bail.

The court was told that Boyle was alleged to have entered a property without permission and taken drugs from the bathroom.

He was asked to leave and went to a vehicle and got a bottle which he was said to have smashed and then stabbed a dog in the face.

A woman present was also injured and Boyle was alleged to have told her he would be back to 'kill the dog and burn the house.'

A neighbour who was filming the incident was also said to have been threatened and told her house would be petrol bombed.

Boyle was alleged to have made off in a vehicle and when police signaled it to stop it made off at speed forcing other vehicles to brake sharply.

Eventually the vehicle fled over the border.

When interviewed about the offences he denied the dangerous driving and claimed he had gone to the house to buy drugs.

He said he attacked the dog in 'self-defence' and only used a plastic bottle.

Bail was opposed due to the risk of reoffending as Boyle has 68 previous convictions.

Defence counsel Stephen Chapman said his client made the case that the dog, which he said was 'an XL bully' had attacked him. He said it was accepted Boyle had a problem with drugs.

District Judge Ted Magill said this was 'a hopeless application' as Boyle had 'an appalling record'.

Bail was refused and Boyle remanded in custody to appear again on July 24.
