Tributes have been paid to a former Sinn Féin councillor who passed away earlier today.

Tony McCaul died peacefully at his Dungiven home today (Saturday) following an illness.

The father-of-five was well-known in the area having served as a councillor for a number of years representing constituents in the Foreglen, Feeny, Gortnaghey and Drum areas.

Mr McCaul was first elected to the former Limavady Borough Council in 2011 and later served on Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council until he retired from politics in 2018.

Following his retirement, he was heavily involved in Dungiven Men's Shed where he was a founding member.

Dozens of tributes have been paid to Mr McCaul following his death.

Leading the tributes was his former Sinn Féin colleague, Councillor Sean McGlinchey, who referred to him as a 'friend and comrade'.

Tony was a life long Republican activist and a Sinn Féin Councillor for seven years. The community of Foreglen, Feeny and Drum will know that Tony was rooted in his community and was always available to anyone who needed him,” he said.

Tony was also a founder of Dungiven’s Men Shed, an important community organisation established to support men’s mental health and wellbeing. Tony has left an important legacy in this area and we are grateful for his work and friendship over the years.

We will miss him sorely.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.”

Feeny Community Association also expressed its condolences to Mr McCaul's family.

A spokesperson said: “Tony worked so hard as a councillor for the Feeny area and was at the forefront in our application for the new community centre and the playpark and games area.

As a councillor Tony called on a weekly basis to see if there was any issues within the community and to make sure local residents had a voice within council. When he had stepped down from council Tony still called from time to time to see how the community group was going and offering advice and support. We will forever remember Tony, May he rest in eternal peace.”

Foreglen GAC also paid tribute to Tony, who was a former executive committee member, describing him as 'an all round great man'.

The club would like to offer its sincere condolences on the sad passing of club stalwart Tony McCaul. Tony was once part of our executive committee, he was very involved with obtaining club grants throughout the years and during COVID he was steadfast in providing for our community, especially the elderly,” read a statement.

Tony was an all round great man that loved to help others and he will be sorely missed.

We ask all club members, past and present, to attend the funeral at 12:45pm with Foreglen gear to carry out a guard of honour.   Ar dheis Dé go raibh a Anam.”

Mr McCaul's Requiem Mass will take place in St Peter and St Paul’s Church, Foreglen on Monday, December 30 at 2pm followed by interment immediately afterwards in the adjoining graveyard.
