Nine of Dungiven's most inspiring women are set to be recognised at an awards ceremony which is set to be held early next year.

'Nollaig Na mBan – Dungiven Female Champions' was launched last week by two Dungiven clubs – St Patrick's Camogie Club and St Canice's Ladies GFC.

Tricia Harkin, Chairperson of St Canice's Ladies, says the awards was the brainchild of one of the committee members and is 'an appreciation' for the women in the Dungiven community.

Residents are being asked to nominate special females who deserve to be a 'champion' in one of nine categories.

The categories are caring, sporting, charity, parish work, community, inspirational, neighbour, music and business.

“The two clubs are separate but we have decided to come together to organise Nollaig Na mBan - it's an appreciation for the women in the community who don't normally get recognised,” said Tricia.

The nominations are open to everyone in the Dungiven community and Tricia is encouraging people to think of someone who would be worthy of one of the awards.

Nominees are asked to fill in a nomination form, either online or in Eurospar, Dungiven, and explain in less than 50 words why the person they are nominating deserves an award.

“We are aware that there are so many people within our community who volunteer and who are never recognised,” continued Tricia.

“An awards ceremony will take place on the 6th of January to recognise the winners with their families and friends.

“Nollaig Na mBan means Women's Christmas so that is why we have chosen that day as it's all about women and celebrating them.”

Nomination forms can be found HERE or in Eurospar, Dungiven. The closing date for nominations will be Thursday, November 30.

The individual awards will be presented at an event in Glór Dun Geimhin Hall on Saturday, January 6 2024 where light supper will be served and there will be live entertainment.
