Sam Todd has left Derry City to join Irish League side Larne on a short-term loan deal until January.

The defender, who scored the winning goal in Derry City's recent FAI Cup game at Cork City, is the second player to join the Irish champions in the past week, following Jordan McEneff from the Brandywell.

Todd has made 14 appearances for the first team this season, but only started five times in all.

Manager Ruaidhri Higgins has recently boosted his defence with the arrivals of wing-back Sean Robertson, centre-half Duncan Idehen and former Liverpool star Andre Wisdom.

26-year-old Todd made his Derry City debut in a Europa League tie against FC Midtjylland back in 2017, before leaving the club, but returned last year and has now made 20 appearances in all. His match-winning goal against Cork City recently was his first senior goal for the club.

Larne boss Tiernan Lynch was please to make the signing ahead of a new domestic campaign, which kicks off this weekend, away to Coleraine.

“If there’s an opportunity to strengthen the group then we make no secret about our desire to do that," he said. “Having seen Sam up close we feel he very much falls into that category. Sam comes to us having got into double figures for appearances at Derry City this season and we hope that will help him to hit the ground running with us.”
