Two building fires in Derry treated as arson

Police in Derry are appealing for information after two fires last night, Monday April 10.

The first fire was at a derelict building on Drumahoe Road and was reported just after 7.15pm.

The second fire was reported just before 8pm, at a building on Glenshane Road.

Both these fires are being treated as arson.

A spokesperson for the PSNI said: "Enquiries are underway, and police would appeal to anyone who was in either of these areas last night and saw any suspicious activity, or has information about what occurred to contact them on 101, quoting reference 1728 10/04/23.

"Alternatively, you can submit a report online using the non-emergency reporting form via http://www.psni.police.uk/makeareport/ You can also contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or online at http://crimestoppers-uk.org/"

People Before Profit Waterside Representative Davina Pulis praised the Fire and Rescue Service for professionalism in dealing with two fires last night.
Ms Pulis said: "Without the speedy response and bravery of our fire service these incidents could have been much worse. We thank them for their service."
The People Before Profit representative said that the old Faughan Valley School where one of the blazes took place should have been demolished long ago;
Ms Pulis continued: "The school closed in 2004. All kinds of promises were made to residents as to what would happen to the site but none of these were ever delivered.
"It is disgraceful that almost 20 years later the site remains a dangerous wreck of a building. An eyesore and a magnet for anti social activity.
"There was an opportunity long ago to save the building and create a community space, however that has now gone and demolition should commence at once.

"People Before Profit would like to implement a full community consultation so the residents of Drumahoe have their say about future use of the Drumahoe Road site."
