18-year-old in custody after early morning armed burglary in Derry

The 18-year-old was detained on suspicion of aggravated burglary, possession of an offensive weapon and Class A and B drug offences
A PSNI spokesperson said: “Officers were making enquiries into an altercation on Strand Road at 3.40am today, (Wednesday, September 9).
“During these enquiries they became aware of an unreported incident at a shop in the same area. It’s understood a man had entered the premises, grabbed an item from a shelf, there was an altercation and the male brandished a weapon at staff.
“As part of enquiries into this incident, officers arrested an 18-year-old male on suspicion of aggravated burglary and stealing, and possessing an offensive weapon in a public place.
“The male was also arrested on suspicion of Possession of Class A and Class B controlled drugs, and he remains in custody at his time.”
Inspector Courtney said: “While no physical injuries were reported by any staff, given the nature of what is reported to have happened, this must have been a frightening incident for those present.
“As enquiries continue, we’re keen to hear from anyone who may have been in the area, including taxi or delivery drivers, who may have captured relevant footage.”
