Praxis Care: Katherine Greer & Paul Webb
Praxis Care celebrates Katherine Greer, a client of their Coleraine mental health service, for successfully completing her second year of an MSc programme. This achievement highlights her resilience and demonstrates the impact of peer-research roles in fostering self-confidence and creating meaningful employment for individuals who might not have otherwise had access to such opportunities.
Katherine’s journey with Praxis Care began when a staff member at the service encouraged her to apply for a peer-researcher position. This role sparked her interest in education and, with Praxis Care's support, Katherine applied for and enrolled in an MSc programme. “It gives me something to do that uses my brain and has given me motivation and confidence,” Katherine shared, reflecting on the impact of her studies in keeping her socially connected and intellectually engaged.
A key element of Katherine’s success has been her relationship with Paul Webb, Head of Research at Praxis Care. As a mentor, Paul has provided Katherine with invaluable guidance, especially as she developed new skills, such as I.T. proficiency. “Paul’s mentorship has been crucial,” Katherine said. “He has encouraged me without pushing too hard, allowing me to learn at my own pace.”
Paul Webb praised Katherine’s achievements: “She has authored many publications with other members of our research team and assisted in training others. Her success proves that with the right support, barriers can be overcome, and I am incredibly proud of her progress.”
Looking ahead, Katherine aims to use her expertise to promote co-production—where clients collaborate with professionals to design their own care plans. “I hope to inspire change, showing that co-production requires investment and flexibility, but the positive outcomes make it worthwhile,” she explained.
Katherine’s advice to others considering a similar path is both simple and empowering: “It’s hard work but possible. You are just as good as other researchers, even if they speak more confidently.”
Paul Webb added, “Praxis Care is committed to supporting people interested in becoming peer researchers, regardless of their background. No prior research knowledge is needed—just the willingness to learn. We provide the training, support, and a welcoming environment where you’ll be valued as a unique contributor to our research team.”
