County Derry filmmaker Desmond Lynch premieres latest short following IndieCork selection

A County Derry writer and filmmaker has released his latest short film, “Goodnight, Midnight”.

Set against the backdrop of the modern sex industry in Northern Ireland, the film offers a raw, character-driven exploration of intimacy, financial desperation, and the complexities of human connection.

Starring Melissa Ciepierski and Mike Walsh, “Goodnight, Midnight” follows the story of a Belfast-based escort known as Midnight. The narrative unfolds as Midnight attempts to convince a married man to break his vows, serving as a catalyst for a deeper look into the lives of those navigating the sex work culture in Ireland.

The film's writer and director, Desmond Lynch, from Banagher, said: “Goodnight, Midnight is the story about an escort who tries to convince a married man to cheat on his wife. The film deals with anxiety around money, loneliness in the modern world as well as the culture around sex work in Ireland.

“The short film is influenced by drama films such as In the Mood for Love and Shame. I wanted to make this film because I found the topic very uncomfortable and I wanted to learn more about it. I wanted to explore the awkwardness, the clinical nature of the job and the loneliness as well.

“What I want people to take away from this film is just how strange this type of situation is when you really think about it, and to consider that it may be more common than you think.”

Goodnight, Midnight has been screened at a variety of festivals in the UK and Ireland. Including the BAFTA qualifying IndieCork film festival as well as the Disappear Here film festival.

Lynch released another short film last year called “SHOWTIME”. His other films “Trespass” and “God’s Country” are on the festival circuit. With “Trespass” expected to be released to the public later this year.
