All Kinds of Everything has announced a major addition to its festival, with acclaimed writer and novelist Irvine Welsh set to appear in Derry this April in conversation with award-winning broadcaster, Stephen McCauley.

Best known for his groundbreaking debut Trainspotting, Welsh will take part in a special in conversation event as part of the festival, offering a unique opportunity to hear directly from one of the most distinctive voices in modern fiction.

Published in 1993, Trainspotting became a defining novel of its generation, capturing a raw and uncompromising portrait of life that resonated far beyond its Edinburgh setting. It was later adapted into the iconic film directed by Danny Boyle and starring Ewan McGregor, Robert Carlyle and Kelly Macdonald.

2026 marks the 30th anniversary of the Trainspotting film release, a milestone that highlights the significant influence of Welsh’s work across both literature and cinema.

Welsh has gone on to publish fourteen novels, including follow-up Porno, which later inspired T2 Trainspotting, reuniting the original cast on screen. He has also written widely across the same universe in books such as Glue, Skagboys and The Blade Artist, exploring the lives of his characters across different stages and generations.

His writing remains known for its energy, dark humour and sharp social observation, building a loyal readership around the world, and away from fiction, Welsh is also recognised for his outspoken presence online and his involvement in charitable work, including his role as an ambassador for the Homeless World Cup.

He will appear at The Playhouse, Artillery Street on Saturday, April 4 at 3.00pm.

The event forms part of All Kinds of Everything, a new festival taking place across the city from April 2 to 5, with concerts, film screenings, studio collaborations and discussions happening in venues including the Guildhall, Nerve Centre, The Playhouse, Sandinos, Guildhall Taphouse and Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin.

Advance tickets are priced at £5 and £7, with further details available at www.allkindsfest.com
