Martial Arts: Team Torres strikes gold as Irish champions

Team Torres were crowned overall champions at No-Gi Irish Open held in Dublin. After recent success at the Irish BJJ League in Letterkenny, a slightly smaller group of competitors had made the trip to UCD College with the hopes of taking home more gold. And that they did, by bringing back nine gold, four silver and three bronze medals. With almost twice as many gold medals as any other team present, Team Torres were proclaimed No-Gi Irish team champions, edging out UFC Fighter Conor McGregor’s gym, SBG, by nine points. This is now the second BJJ competition in a row that Team Torres has come out as overall team champions, and will surely not be the last. This success brought pride to both the team and its competitors, and to the coach, Martin McLaughlin (pictured) who recently competed in the World Championships in Las Vegas. Martin, who is the current European champion, was beaten in the second round by a referee’s decision to a former five-time champion and the eventual world champion on the day. Not many people are given the opportunity to compete at the world championshipsl be returning next year hoping bring home gold. With various BJJ competitions and mixed martial arts events coming up across Ireland, there is a lot going on down at Team Torres headquarters on the Bay Road. And as this is the second competition in a row that Team Torres has been overall team champions it is easy to suggest that there is nothing but success on the horizon for the club and each of its members.
