A County Derry family had a lucky escape when a tree hit their vehicle in Limavady during the midst of Storm Amy.
The video captured by Desmond Loughery shows a silver Mercedes surrounded by a tree blocking on the Roemill Road in Limavady.
Husband and wife Callum and Amy Purdy were travelling home with their two small children when a tree came down on top of their car. The couple, who only married three weeks ago, have been left feeling shocked.
Speaking to the County Derry Post Amy said: “We were coming down home and a tree was already down outside the Gorteen Hotel so I turned to drive back up the road. Just as I went to drive, a huge tree came down on top of the car. It scared the children, they were badly shaken but we got out OK and safe.”
Storm Amy is set to see inland gusts expected to reach 60–70mph, with some exposed coastal areas seeing winds up to 80mph.
It has been revealed this evening winds of 92mph were recorded at Magilligan. This sets a new October wind gust record for Northern Ireland.
Thousands throughout County Derry are currently without power. This is expected to disrupt mobile phone services and other essential services.
Winds are expected to ease later this evening but are expected to remain strong into Saturday morning.
