Derry City finally ended their winless run to secure their first away victory of the campaign in the opening fixture of a quickfire trilogy against Dublin clubs, claiming a smash-and-grab 2–1 win over Shelbourne at Tolka Park on Friday evening.
Super substitute Dipo Akinyemi grabbed the winner twenty-two minutes from time with his first touch, having entered the field of play sixty seconds earlier, to secure the Candystripes’ first victory in eight games, with the Foylesiders having gone without a win since February in what has been a torrid start to the campaign.
The result will ease pressure somewhat on under-fire manager Tiernan Lynch, who has faced heavy scrutiny following a slow opening to a season in which many expected Derry to challenge towards the top end of the table. Victory against the 2024 champions moves the Candystripes up to fifth place, six points behind Bohemians in the final European qualification spot, having started the night in seventh. Derry will play the Gypsies in Dalymount Park in a fortnight.
Lynch has also been dealing with a mounting injury crisis, with Brian Maher, James McClean, Robert Slevin and captain Michael Duffy all unavailable. The Belfast native made two changes from last week’s 2–2 draw with Dundalk, as Josh Thomas and Paddy McClean came into the starting side in place of Slevin and Akinyemi.
Meanwhile, Shelbourne boss Joey O'Brien was left reflecting on a third successive defeat for the Drumcondra side. The former Ireland international made five changes following last week’s 3–2 loss to Shamrock Rovers, with Sam Bone, Evan Caffrey, Dan Kelly, Eoin Martin and Paddy Barrett all coming into the starting XI.
Shelbourne almost made the perfect start in the sixth minute when Paddy Barrett rose highest to meet a Harry Wood corner, but on-loan goalkeeper Edward Beach reacted sharply to save low to his right.
However, Derry took the lead in the nineteenth minute with their first clear opportunity of the evening, and it arrived in spectacular fashion through Barry Cotter. The Ennis native reacted quickest to a loose ball following an uncleared corner and lashed a superb volley into the net at the Drumcondra end.
Shelbourne responded strongly and almost equalised ten minutes later through Evan Caffrey, but once again Beach stood firm to deny them. Moments later Ben Doherty forced an excellent save from Wessel Speel, while Josh Thomas also tested the Shelbourne goalkeeper after linking well with Cotter down the right flank.
The hosts found their equaliser four minutes after the restart following a loose pass from Cotter. Kerr McInroy intercepted possession before Kameron Ledwidge delivered a precise cross that John Martin finished emphatically to level the contest.
Harry Wood should have given Shelbourne the lead shortly afterwards as the home side turned up the pressure, but Beach produced another outstanding stop to keep Derry in the game.
However, just after the hour mark, Derry capitalised on a fortunate break in the Shelbourne defence to restore their advantage. A blocked clearance from Ledwidge fell kindly to Akinyemi, who fired home from close range with his first involvement after entering the pitch.
Shelbourne pushed hard for a late equaliser and nearly found one in stoppage time, but Beach produced another crucial save to deny Barrett from the edge of the area and secure a vital three points for the visitors.
It represents a significant result for Lynch and his players, though they have little time to dwell on it with the visit of Shamrock Rovers to Find Insurance Celtic Park as Derry return to action in their home away from home as the Ryan McBride Brandywell pitch continues to bed in, following a gruelling run of four consecutive away fixtures. That will be followed by another trip to Dublin a week later to face Bohemians.
Shelbourne, meanwhile, will look to halt their recent slide when they host Drogheda United FC next week as they attempt to respond to three straight defeats.
