James McClean has extended his contract with Wrexham
James McClean has agreed a new contract with Wrexham, which will expire in the summer of 2026.
The Derry native joined the Welsh club from Wigan Athletic last season and helped them achieve promotion to League One, featuring in 44 games last season.
The former Republic of Ireland international signed an initial one-year deal, which was automatically extended for a further 12 months at the end of last season.
However, Wrexham have moved to ensure the 35-year-old will be part of the club for the next two seasons.
McClean told the club website: “I’m obviously delighted.
“Since I’ve been here, I’ve really enjoyed it, and to be given the opportunity to continue that for another two seasons is something I’m really looking forward to.
“It’s been successful so far, and hopefully there is more success to come over the next two seasons.”
The former Derry City, Sunderland, West Bromwich Albion, and Stoke City utility player was one of the most used players in Phil Parkinson’s Wrexham side last season, primarily used as a left-wing back but occasionally as a left-sided midfielder or winger.
On the new contract, manager Phil Parkinson said: “We’re pleased James has signed a new contract.
“He was excellent for us last season, and we’re looking forward to continuing to work with him.”
The Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney-owned club will begin their League One campaign this Saturday against Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday, August 10, their first in the third tier in 19 years.
