A 'major' County Derry infrastructure project to improve safety at a problematic junction is to begin within weeks, said a local MLA.
The £700,000 scheme will include right hand turning lanes, drainage works, a footpath and improvements to the hard shoulders at the junction of Ranaghan Road and the Glenshane Road, Maghera.
A number of accidents have taken place on the stretch of road over the last few years, prompting calls for improvements to be made to its safety.
Mid Ulster MLA Patsy McGlone has said the work will begin shortly.
"I have received word from officials in the Department for Infrastructure that the Ranaghan Road project will begin in the next few weeks," he said.
"It’s a major scheme. Initial works will include improving road drainage around the Ranaghan Road junction with the Glenshane Road before the further road works to increase road safety go ahead.
"Cllr Martin Kearney and I have been working with local residents and DfI for a number of years and we are glad to see this project progress and our thanks go to Minister Nichola Mallon and DfI Officials in County Hall, Omagh for their ongoing support and help with this project.”
