Derry City and Strabane District Council are reinstating locks and keys for gated laneways in the lower Strand Road area due to illegal dumping, dog fouling and general poor condition. SDLP councillor Shauna Cusack welcomed the action. Cllr Cusack said: "We at Mark H Durkan's office have been dealing with issues of illegal dumping, dog fouling and general poor condition of these laneways for years now as people treat these areas with total disrespect. "Most of this anti-community behaviour is occurring in the evenings or early morning when no one is about to witness it. "I am glad to hear that new locks have been issued for these gates and local residents given keys to take responsibility. It is envisaged the gates will be locked from 9pm to 7.30am. Hopefully this will go some way to curbing the frustration of the local residents . "Should any resident need to contact the key holders for emergencies or any further information please do not hesitate to contact Mark H Durkan's constituency office at Long's complex Meadowbank."
