A man has appeared at Derry Magistrate's Court charged with possession of a class B drug after he walked into Strand Road PSNI station with half a joint in his pocket.

Robert Canning (43) of Abbots Walk in Derry was charged on May 12 last year after walking into the police station for an unrelated matter.

Police told him that they could smell cannabis on him and Canning found a half-smoked joint in his pocket that he said he had forgotten about.

Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley said that he believed Canning was telling the truth about the joint as 'nobody in their right mind would walk into a police station with a joint on them'.

He was fined £150.
