Police in Derry are at the scene of a security alert in the Glenabbey Close area of the city this morning, Thursday, November 20.

A number of homes have been evacuated and cordons are in in place.

Police are asking that the public avoid the area at this time.

An update will follow in due course.

SDLP Ballyarnett councillor Rory Farrell has said that repeated security alerts in the Glenabbey Close area of Derry is disrupting the lives of the local community.

Cllr Farrell said: “This is the second security alert in this area in as many weeks and once again families have been asked to pack up in the middle of a very cold night and leave their homes as police respond to this incident.

“This has caused huge disruption for those affected, children will be going into school this morning and adults to work after a very difficult night and the people behind this clearly care nothing for the impact their actions are having on these families.

“Last week saw the discovery of two viable pipe bombs which put people in this area at serious risk. I would urge those behind these alerts to get off the backs of the local community and let people live their lives in peace.

“Anyone with information should come forward to police.”
