Derry's Foyle Bridge
A judge at Derry Magistrate's Court has said that people have to be aware that the speed limit on the Foyle Bridge was 50mph and not 60mph as many seemed to believe.
District Judge Ted Magill made his comments in the case of Justin John Reinheimer (29) of Beechill View in Drumahoe who was detected driving at more than 60mph on the Foyle Bridge on April 28 this year.
Judge Magill said that it appeared from the number of cases coming before him for speeding on the bridge that there was a misapprehension among people as to the speed limit on that stretch of road.
He said it should be emphasized that the limit was 50mph not 60mph.
Reindeer was fined £65 and given three penalty points.
Meanwhile in a separate case a young man who was four days away from being out of his time as an R driver has been fined after being detected driving at 86mph on August 18.
Scott Mullan (18) of Rosemount Avenue admitted the offence of driving in a 70mph zone.
Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott said that the defendant was only days away from being out of his R period but accepted he was still driving too fast.
He asked the judge not to disqualify Mullan as his car was essential for his employment.
Mullan was given five penalty points and fined £300.
