Derry woman who illegally overtook another vehicle in Inishowen fined €250

The woman failed to appear at Buncrana District Court.

A Derry woman who performed an illegal overtaking manoeuvre whilst driving in Inishowen last year has been fined €250 in court.

Emma Doherty, of 9 Bloomfield Park, Shantallow, Derry, did not appear before Buncrana District Court to answer a charge of entering hatched markings of a roadway.

However, Judge Ciaran Liddy told the prosecuting guards to “carry on” with their evidence against the 40-year-old, after he was shown proof that she had been notified.

Sergeant Charlene Anderson was sworn in to testify in the matter. She told the court how she had been on duty at Glebe Large, Fahan on Friday, November 22, 2024.

At 11.24am that morning, Sgt Anderson observed a UK-registered white Nissan Qashai overtake through the hatch markings on the main R238 road.

She stopped the driver, who gave her name as Emma Doherty, of the above address.

A fixed charge penalty notice was issued in respect of the motoring misdemeanour less than one week later, on November 28, but it was not paid.

After listening to the evidence, Judge Liddy found the “facts proven” and he fined the Derry woman €250, with three months to pay.

In the event of an appeal by Ms Doherty, the judge set recognisance at €100 cash.
