A Derry councillor has urged the public to support the events planned for next week to mark the 77th anniversary of the Nakba.
Sinn Féin councillor Pat Murphy said: "I am calling on Derry’s citizens to show solidarity with Palestine on the 77th anniversary of the Nakba, which takes place on May 15 and marks the beginning of the destruction of the Palestinian homeland and the mass displacement of the majority of the Palestinian population.
"The English translation of Nakba is ‘catastrophe’, and the event was indeed catastrophic for the citizens of Palestine, the communities and families throughout the region, and further afield.”
"As the Israeli state continues to inflict a genocide on the Palestinian people, international solidarity is something we can all do to show our support to the Palestinian people, to keep highlighting the horrific war crimes being carried out by Israel and to continue to expose the genocide and brutal occupation for the horrific attack on humanity that it is.
"Derry Sinn Féin will be hosting two solidarity vigils on Thursday, May 15 at 6pm. One at the Cityside end of the Craigavon Bridge and one at the Fort George Roundabout. Everyone is welcome to participate in these vigils.
"Other events are being planned by other groups including the Bloody Sunday Trust and the IPSC and we are encouraging people to attend all of the events, to show our solidarity and support with the people of Palestine."
