A protest will be held in Derry this week opposing the cut to the winter fuel payment.

More than nine million pensioners across the UK will no longer be eligible for up to £300 this winter after the Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced the introduction of means-testing following Labour's election win.

The move to the cut the allowance has proved controversial.

Derry and Strabane People Before Profit councillor Shaun Harkin said he has been contacted by 'distressed and angry constituents' following the Chancellor's announcement.

He urged Derry residents to attend Thursday evenings rally in Guildhall Square at 6pm.

Cllr Harkin said: "I've been contacted by distressed and angry constituents and support organisations calling for action in response to the cruel cut to Winter Fuel Payments.

"Derry City and Strabane District Council agreed to make a clear demand on Westminster and the Stormont Executive for the cut to be reversed.

"However, if we want to influence government policies, motions aren't enough. We need to back it up with action.

"We need to put feet on the street to undo this decision.

"The cut to the Winter Fuel Payment is a travesty. It will hurt thousands of older people, many of whom are very vulnerable. It's not necessary, it's a political choice.

"Getting access to Pension Credit isn't a solution for all because many who need the winter fuel payment aren't below the threshold cut-off.

"The DfC Minister must be held to account on the failure of the Communities Department to carry out a Equality Impact Assessment (EQIA) before deciding to implement further austerity.

"The Guildhall rally is supported by Older People North West, anti-poverty campaigns, community groups, Women's rights organisations, trade unions and Councillors.

"This is part of a widening action campaign to protect older people.

"We urge everyone to stand with older people across Derry and the entire North and build united resistance to this cruel cut."
