Derry Magistrate's Court heard today how a doctor was detected driving at 111mph in a 70mph zone as the defendant received what a judge described as 'a very significant fine'.
Andrew Hanoman (29) with an address at Crown Place in Portsmouth was charged with driving at excess speed on June 23 last year.
The court heard that Hanoman was detected driving at the speed between Claudy and Dungiven and was travelling too fast to be dealt with by a fixed penalty.
Defence counsel Grainne McAnaney said that there was nothing to be said about 'the inexcusable speed'.
She said her client was working in a hospital in Portsmouth but was coming from Donegal on other business.
The barrister said that on the day on question Hanoman had driven more than 300 miles but had no previous record.
Deputy District Judge Liam McStay said that as a doctor Hanoman would be all too aware 'of the outcome of excessive speed'.
He said he would mark this by a significant fine well above the usual for speeding cases.
He imposed a fine of £1,000 and 8 penalty points.
