Regular users of the indoor maxi pitches at Meadowbank Sports Arena in Magherafelt will notice a big difference in the playing surface following the official reopening of the facilities, after the completion of a major refurbishment project to replace the indoor pitch carpet.

The works, delivered by Sports Grounds Specialists, represent an investment of approximately £200,000 by Mid Ulster District Council through its Capital Investment Programme.

The upgraded surface will further enhance hockey development in the region and continues to support a wide range of multi-sport and multi-use activities. Its completion marks another milestone within Mid Ulster District Council’s Pitch and Recreational Spaces Strategic Five-Year Plan — a £4.6 million programme guiding the improvement of sporting facilities across the district through both Council-owned venues and collaborative projects with local clubs and organisations.

Completed three weeks ahead of schedule, the new surface offers an enhanced experience for a wide range of sports and activities, ensuring improved performance, comfort, and durability for all participants.

Welcoming the reopening, Chair of Mid Ulster District Council, Councillor Frances Burton, said: “This investment in Meadowbank Sports Arena is another significant step in delivering on our commitment to improving sporting infrastructure across Mid Ulster. By ensuring our facilities are modern, safe and accessible, we’re enabling more people to participate in sport and physical activity, benefiting health, wellbeing and community life.”

The upgraded indoor pitch is now open and available for bookings by telephoning 028 7939 7117 or emailing leisure@midulstercouncil.org
