Pipelaying to get underway in Magherafelt to support new development on Rainey Street

The work is set to commence on June 10.

NI Water is due to commence a programme of pipelaying works in Magherafelt on Monday, June 10 to install an essential new surface water sewer to serve a mixed-use development on Rainey Street.

The pipelaying work – which will also involve the construction of associated manholes – will extend from No. 70/72 Rainey Street, across the road into Garden Street and onto Post Office Lane where it will continue towards the rear of the development at 17-23 Rainey Street.

NI Water Project Manager Mark Henderson said: “This new pipeline is required to support the drainage for a new development on Rainey Street. Work is scheduled to get underway during the week commencing Monday, June 10 and will take approximately five weeks to complete overall.

Pipelaying will commence on Rainey Street, adjacent to the junction of Garden Street. To carry out this section of work as safely as possible, a lane closure with temporary traffic lights will be in place between Nos. 58 and 67 Rainey Street until Wednesday, June 12. In a bid to minimise disruption to road users, this section of work will be undertaken outside of peak traffic hours, between 9:30am - 4:30pm daily.

Following the crossing of Rainey Street, pipelaying will move to Garden Street where work will take approximately a week to complete. During this time, Garden Street will be closed from its junction with Rainey Street to its junction with Post Office Lane. Residents and business owners who need to access properties in or adjacent to College Court and Garden Street Mews should initially access via Union Road/Hospital Road.

As work progresses along Garden Street, past the entrance to these properties, access will be from Rainey Street. All businesses and residential properties on Garden Street between Post Office Lane and Union Road should be accessed via Union Road/Hospital Road while work on Garden Street is ongoing. A signed diversion route will be in place for motorists.

Following the work on Garden Street, the final section of pipelaying will extend along Post Office Lane. To facilitate this work Post Office Lane will be closed at its junction with Garden Street from Monday, June 17 until Wednesday, July 10. During the three sections of pipelaying, we would kindly ask residents and businesses to park vehicles outside of any working area. Pedestrian management may also be in place during these essential works.

An extensive letter drop has been carried out in the area and signage has been erected to inform the wider public of the work. Our contractor, Deane Public Works, will liaise with any affected properties along the pipeline route with regards to access, deliveries and bin collections.

NI Water and our project team from Deane Public Works and AtkinsRéalis take this opportunity to thank the local community for their patience and cooperation while we undertake this essential work to support development in Magherafelt. Our contractor will strive to keep disruption to a minimum and complete the work in the shortest possible timeframe.”
