Heavily pregnant woman jailed for kicking man in the head

A 'heavily pregnant woman' has been jailed at Derry Magistrate's Court today for kicking a man in the head while he was lying on the ground.

Tamsin Palmer (20) of Jefferson Court in Derry admitted a series of charges relating to an incident in John Street on May 9.

The court heard that there was a fight between two men and Palmer intervened initially it appeared to try and break it up.

The prosecutor said she 'inexplicably' kicked the injured party on the head.

The court heard that once she was arrested she attempted to strike out at police and spat at an officer hitting him on the face.

Defence counsel Sinead Rogan said her client was heavily pregnant and was in breach of suspended sentences.

District Judge Barney McElholm said that kicking someone on the ground 'could have caused death or serious injury'.

He also said that spitting at police was something 'that is not going to be tolerated.'

He sentenced Palmer to nine months in prison
