A 33-year-old woman has had a conviction every year since 2010, Derry Magistrate's Court heard today.

Bridget Mongan (33) of Foyle Road in Derry appeared to face a series of charges including hijacking and assault.

Mongan was charged with hijacking a vehicle and assault on June 16. She was also charged with the theft of alcohol from a local supermarket on March 28.

Mongan was further charged with possessing Pregablin on August 22.

Bail was opposed due to the risk of flight as a police officer said that after the hijacking offences the defendant had fled to the Republic.

He said that on June 16 a delivery driver was delivering to an address in Abercorn Road.

He arrived at the address and left the keys in the ignition before attempting to make the delivery.

There was no response and as he made his way to his car he saw a male and female in the vehicle.

The driver tried to grab the door but Mongan was said to have pushed him away before the vehicle drove off.

The vehicle was stopped by Gardai in Letterkenny and Mongan and a male were imprisoned in Dublin.

The court heard that police were concerned she would flee the jurisdiction if released.

Details were also given of an alleged theft on March 28 when a woman identified by CCTV as Mongan was seen stealing alcohol.

The court then heard that on August 22 police received a report of a female stumbling across the Letterkenny Road and hitting her head off a kerb.

Police found Mongan and she admitted taking Pregablin and a blister pack of five tablets was found on her.

Bail was opposed also due to the risk of re-offending and the court heard that Mongan had 63 previous convictions.

Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley said that fear of flight was not an issue as Mongan had returned to the jurisdiction on her release from prison in the Republic.

The solicitor said that there was a man involved in the hijacking that had yet to be apprehended.

Bail was granted to an address approved by police and Mongan will appear again on September 4.
