Local people have been asked to join a picket organised in support of local striking Department for Infrastructure (DfI) Roads Service workers.

The workers themselves will be on the picket line from Monday (July 3) to Friday (July 7).

The picket will take place on Thursday, July 6, at the Woodburn Depot, on Crescent Road, in the Waterside.

Derry City and Strabane District councillor Shaun Harkin (People Before Profit) said the DfI Roads Service workers had been "forced to hit the picket line again this week in pursuit of fair pay have our full solidarity".

Cllr Harkin added: "DfI officials are using the excuse of Stormont being down to claim they don't have the means to take appropriate action -  but they have no problem implementing cuts demanded by the Tories.

"What road service workers do is essential and it's not acceptable for them to be on low pay. The draconian bonus system should be replaced with decent pay.

"We commend UNITE and GMB trade unions for backing their members and supporting the strike. Strike action has delivered pay rises during the cost of living crisis.

"The political system is failing when those at the centre of it for decades can't pay workers properly and maintain our infrastructure in a safe way. Join me on the Woodburn picket line this Thursday at 10am to stand in solidarity with the strikers."
