Cuts to nursing places will affect Ulster University, Magee
Aontú Cllr for Ballyarnett Emmet Doyle has expressed concern regarding the recent announcement from the Department of Health it intends to cut 300 nursing training places.
Cllr Doyle said: "Such a move could adversely hit Magee as Ulster University's provision for nursing are all situated in Derry
"All of Ulster University's nursing training places were moved to Magee in February 2020 and it has been immensely successful.
"News from the Department of Health this morning it will cut 300 training places will hit Magee and it is clear that the Department and Ulster University need to tell us how they intend to secure Magee's long term future where it is supposed to be growing.
"This decision will be felt for years to come within the health service and affect prospective jobs in this local area. The Permanent Secretary needs to look at this again - not only is it irresponsible to move this proposal forward but given the acute impacts to Magee and Derry it is vandalism."
