Former Derry football manager Rory Gallagher has been appointed to a coaching role with Naas.
The Kildare senior champions released a statement on social media confirming the reappointment of manager Joe Murphy for the upcoming season.
It is understood that Gallagher is expected to replace Kevin Downes in his management team.
The 46-year-old had been previously coaching with Monaghan side Corduff following his decision to step down as Derry manager prior to the 2023 Ulster final following allegations of domestic abuse made against him by his estranged wife, Nicola. Although there was a PSNI investigation, no charges were pressed.
The Fermanagh man managed Derry to a first Ulster title in 24 years in 2022 and had been linked with the vacant position following Mickey Harte leaving the role in the summer of 2024.
Despite some rumoured support from inside the Derry County Board, he was not offered a return, and former Kerry coach Paddy Tally was eventually appointed in November.
Gallagher’s appointment may be the key to the Kildare club getting their hands on the Leinster senior football championship, having lost two of the last four Leinster senior club finals.
Both 2021 and 2023 defeats came at the hands of Kilmacud Crokes, after Naas have won four successive Kildare Football titles.
