Jarlath Canning names local trio to lead Derry City FC Women

Jarlath Canning has announced a new Head of Academy and first team staff

Following his recent appointment as Derry City FC Women First Team Manager, Jarlath Canning has officially confirmed the coaching team that will support him for the upcoming campaign, alongside a key leadership change within the club’s youth system.

Joining the First Team coaching staff are three highly respected figures with deep ties to the club’s development structures: Paddy McLaughlin, Gary ‘Banty’ McDermott, and Shane Hannigan.

The trio moves up from the academy ranks in what is described as a "natural transition" for the group.

Speaking on the appointments, First Team Manager Jarlath Canning said: “We’ve worked together in the academy here for a number of years, so this move up to the First Team feels like a natural step for all of us. There’s real trust and understanding between the staff, and we know exactly the standards we want to set.

“Our focus is on strengthening that pathway, giving academy players the opportunity to step up when they’re ready. Just as importantly, it’s about helping the senior players already here to improve, push on, and reach new levels.

The appointments signal a clear strategy of continuity and internal progression, aimed at raising competitive standards across the entire squad while building a sustainable future for the club.
