In a moving tribute to their late grandfather, brothers Rory and Ronan Hale delivered exceptional performances on Saturday, honouring the legacy of Irish League icon Danny Hale just days after his passing.

Danny, a legendary figure in both Northern Irish and Derry City Football Club history, passed away earlier this week at the age of 84.

Gillingham FC striker Ronan Hale dedicated his match-winning performance in Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Tranmere Rovers to his late grandfather.

Making his full home debut at Priestfield Stadium, the 27-year-old striker, who arrived from Ross County in January, scored both goals, delivering a man of the match performance.

When interviewed after the game, Ronan stated: “It was great to get off the mark and to add two was brilliant.

“Lost my grandad a couple of days ago and that was the perfect send off from him.”

Gillingham manager Gareth Ainsworth praised the striker's resilience, noting his clinical 'poacher' instincts.

On social media, Ronan posted: “3 points and 2 goals. They were for you Granda.”

Cliftonville captain Rory Hale mirrored his brother’s strength, leading the 'Reds' to a 2-1 comeback win against Glenavon in the Irish Cup sixth round at Solitude.

Cliftonville manager Jim Magilton paid “special tribute” to captain Rory Hale for his role in their victory.

Magilton revealed skipper Hale was determined to be involved despite his personal heartbreak and the 29-year-old came off the bench to play an important part in 10-man Cliftonville’s come-from-behind victory.
