Derry City FC has paid tribute to club stalwart, George Caldwell, who sadly passed away on Wednesday.

George served as a long-time volunteer and was instrumental in numerous club projects. He will be particularly remembered as the primary architect and driving force behind the club’s hugely successful Monthly Draw.

In an official statement, Derry City FC paid tribute to his contribution: “George was involved in a number of projects down the years but was a major driving force in establishing and running our hugely successful Monthly Draw.

“He was a very popular figure around the Brandywell and his loss will be sorely felt by all the club.”

Beyond his invaluable contributions to football, George was a devoted family man.

He was the beloved husband of Celine, loving father of Lisa, Christopher and Jonathan, devoted granda of Lauren, Alex, Brendan, Ethan, Eden, Davin, Kaelan and the late baby Emily, dear father-in-law to Barry, Rachel and Lisa, cherished son of the late Mary and William, dear and loving brother of May, Billy and Martin, and a caring uncle to all his nieces and nephews.

George will be reposing at his home, 33 Hatmore Park, on Thursday, January 15 and Friday, January 16 from 11.00am to 10.00pm.

Funeral leaving his home on Saturday, January 17 at 9.20am to St. Eugene’s Cathedral for Requiem Mass at 10.00am. Interment afterwards in the City Cemetery.
