Matchday programme featuring Londonderry
The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) has been forced to apologise after they used the term ‘Londonderry’ in their programme ahead of the European Championship play-off fixture between the Republic of Ireland and Wales.
The graphic displayed the 32 counties across the island of Ireland, detailing where each member of the squad was from, but identified County Derry as Londonderry.
Former Republic of Ireland captain James McClean posted an image of this to his Instagram story, describing it as ‘disgusting, pathetic, and insulting’.
The Wrexham captain said: “The match programme at last night's Ireland vs. Wales game at the Aviva Dublin... disgusting, pathetic, insulting; hang your head in shame, you shower of a*******s.”
An FAI spokesperson described it as a genuine mistake and apologised.
They said: "The wrong graphic was inadvertently used in an Ireland Women's National Team match programme, this was a genuine mistake, and the Football Association of Ireland apologises for any offence caused."
It is not the first time the FAI has been forced to issue an apology about their matchday programme following an Under-21 fixture with Latvia when some of the opposition players were described as 'Robert the Liar' and 'Dario S**t' due to a translation error.
Ireland would go on to lose the playoff with Wales 2-1, denying them the chance to play at their first European Championship.
Wales now head to Switzerland for their maiden appearance at the competition after overcoming Eileen Gleeson's team.
