Ballymaguigan 2-10
Ballinascreen 2-3
RECENTLY crowned All-Ireland Sevens champions Ballymaguigan began their county Intermediate campaign on a winning note with a deserved victory on Monday evening to take a huge step towards a home semi-final.
Two quick fire goals from Lauren Crozier five minutes into the second half was the moment that paved the way to the victory. The visitors led at the break 0-5 to 0-2 after a half that never really got going. The home side were on the back foot for long periods but twice Casey McKenna had efforts rattle the crossbar. McKenna, also notching two goals to her name during the second half.
The opening score of the game came from the boot of McKenna with a free but two excellent scores from Jemma Shivers, who was a live-wire throughout, edged the visitors in front on nine minutes. Another McKenna free levelled matters but with Nicole Nugent putting in a player of the match display for Ballymaguigan, the visitors always looked in control. An Anna Martin brace from frees and Erin Doherty wrapped up the opening half’s scoring.
Then came that huge moment five minutes into the second half when Lauren Crozier struck, her first after she gathered a delivery from her sister Annie and then in a blink of an eye she was rattling the net again and suddenly it was 2-5 to 0-2. Ballinascreen also struck for two quick goals of their own both coming direct from McKenna frees and as the game entered the final quarter the hosts only trailed by five. However, two from Shivers and a free by Martin ended any chances of a comeback. The final say went to Jackie Donnelly when she was expertly picked out by Aine Barton, but with the goal at her mercy Donnelly fired over.
In Group A, Lavey overcame Glen 3-10 to 3-0 to begin their quest for a third successive winning championship campaign. The home side led at the interval 2-4 to 1-0, Aoife Shaw and Noeleen McGill raising the green flags while the visitors’ major came from the penalty spot by Danielle Kivlehan. Beth O’Brien got Glen’s second goal and when Kivlehan was successful once more from the penalty spot they were back within three, 2-6 to 3-0, but Emma Collins’ goal for the hosts ended any hopes of a Glen comeback.
In the junior championship, Claudy took the points home from their visit to Faughanvale after a 2-14 to 2-7 win.
