Derry City will have two representatives in the Northern Ireland squad set to kick off tonight in the U-19 European Championship.

Defenders Daithi McCallion and Conor Barr have been selected for international duty by head coach Gareth McAuley.

The senior European Championships came to an end on July 14, with Spain being the victors.

For football fans that can’t wait for the start of the club game across Europe and the League of Ireland and Foyle Cup can’t satisfy their football feed, then this tournament may help.

The championship is being hosted in Northern Ireland, but it looks set to be a difficult tournament for the hosts.

The Green and White Army has been drawn into a group with Italy, Norway, and Ukraine.

Italy were champions of this tournament last year, making it their second title after their first in 2003.

Ukraine are the other side in the group that has won the tournament previously with their 2009 victory.

Meanwhile, Norway has yet to win the competition but had their best performance last year as they reached the semi-final, with this being their best performance.

However, Northern Ireland have never progressed past the group stage, with their last appearance in this competition in 2005, when Northern Ireland hosted previously.

The Northern Irish have failed to taste victory in this competition since 1977.

But there is renewed hope that the country could enjoy a successful tournament and make history by progressing from the group for the first time.

Should Northern Ireland finish in the top two positions of the group, then they will qualify for the knockout stage and the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup, while third-place will qualify for the FIFA U-20 World Cup play-off.

Group B has France, Turkey, Denmark, and Spain making up the rest of the tournament's roster.

Spain will, however, be missing 17-year-old wonderkid Lamine Yamal, who featured in the winning starting line-up against England in the Euro 2024 final on Sunday and won young player of the tournament at senior level.

Matches will be held in Windsor Park and Seaview in Belfast and Inver Park in Larne.

BBC Sport NI has live coverage of all Northern Ireland matches available live, along with semi-finals and finals from the tournament.
