Motorist disqualified after driving ten-times over drug-dive limit

The man tested positive for the presence of cocaine when stopped by Gardai at a MIT checkpoint in Carrigans

A Derry man has been disqualified from driving after he was found driving while more than ten times over the blood test limit for cocaine in Carrigans.

Gardai were operating a checkpoint on December 18, 2021 at Main Street, Carrigans.

Christopher Melaugh was stopped at 11.58am and failed the roadside test.

When conveyed to Letterkenny Garda Station, Melaugh, a 31-year-old of Hatmore Park, Derry, tested positive for the presence of cocaine.

Melaugh showed a reading of 531.3ng/ml of benzoylecgonine, where the legal limit is 50ng/ml.

Mr Jason Laverty, solicitor for Melaugh, said there had been 'no intention' on the part of his client.

“It is a regretful situation and he is very apologetic,” Mr Laverty said. “He puts his hands up. He is a self-employed car valet and he is trying to do the best he can for himself.”

Sergeant Jim Collins said Laverty had no previous convictions and had not come to adverse attention since.

“It is a high reading,” said Judge Éiteáin Cunningham.

Melaugh was banned from driving for one year and fined €250.
