The Ballymaguigan community are mourning the death of a popular local man well known in GAA circles.

Joe McKee, a ‘stalwart’ within St Trea’s GFC in Ballymaguigan, passed away on Wednesday, October 22.

A heartfelt tribute posted on the south Derry club’s Facebook page read: “It is with deep sadness that we hear of the passing of our dear friend Joe McKee, a true stalwart of our Ballymaguigan club.

“Joe’s dedication to Ballymaguigan knew no bounds, he wasn’t just a member, he was the heart and soul of our club.  Over the years, he served as chairman, secretary, groundsman, trustee and held just about every role imaginable within the club. His love for Gaelic football and for this community, shone through in everything he did.  His hard work, loyalty and love for Ballymaguigan will never be forgotten.

“Joe was a true gentleman who embodied everything good about our club and community. His presence around the pitch was constant and his friendly smile was infectious.  He will be dearly missed by everyone who knew him.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to Eilish, Una, Eimear, Enda and the wider McKee family and friends at this difficult time.

“Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.”

Mid Ulster District Council Vice-Chairperson Denise Johnston, who lives in the area, also paid tribute saying: “God rest his gentle soul. A true gentleman.”

Joe’s wake commenced yesterday evening (Thursday).

His funeral will leave from his late residence on Barrack Road tomorrow (Saturday, October 25) at 12.15pm for 1pm Requiem Mass in Church of St Trea Newbridge.

Burial will take place afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.

A death notice has described Joe as the ‘beloved husband of Eilish and loving father of Una (Hamill), Eimear (Nugent) and Enda, brother of Charlie and the late Martin and Robert’.

The death notice added: “Deeply regretted by his sorrowing wife, daughters, son, daughter in law Karen, son in law Thomas, grandchildren, brother, nephews, nieces and extended family circle.”
